The craft of cannabis cultivation has grown exponentially over the years, ever since the discovery of the plant’s first use in 2800 B.C. Now an increasingly embraced plant, with increasingly popular effects, cannabis is becoming more and more accessible for growers and consumers alike.
Cannabis enthusiasts with a green thumb and a passion for growing may want to try their luck at home. While growing cannabis is difficult, and certain hurdles must be overcome, a bit of knowledge can go a long way toward overcoming these obstacles.
Today, we are going to aim at one of the most important problems to avoid when cultivating your cannabis: loose and airy marijuana buds.
What Are Loose and Airy Buds?
Were you to handcraft the ultimate eighth of cannabis, you’d likely have a few large and compact buds that are decked out in trichomes. Sometimes, we’ll come across buds that are looser, less dense, and consequently airier as a result. These airy buds may feel softer than normal and quite a bit looser.
Airy buds aren’t always a sign of a problem, as some strains are genetically predisposed to them, but they are often a sign of an immature growth with potentially low potency outcomes in the future. As an example, sativa strains often grow long and tall while indica strains often feature compact bud structures.
Loose and airy buds may invoke:
- Lower potency buds.
- Typically smaller in size.
- Lacking in THC/CBD/Terpene production.
- Wasting Resources
What Causes Loose and Airy Buds?
There are several reasons that you may see loose and airy buds produced on your cannabis plants. While loose buds aren’t desired they are far from a death sentence for your plant and can often be rejuvenated with the right approach.
Let’s look at a few of the prominent reasons for loose and airy bud development in your marijuana plant.
Too Much (Or a Lack Thereof) Light
For your marijuana plants to grow to the best of their ability, they will require an appropriate amount of light. Lighting conditions should be carefully curated if you are growing indoors. If you are growing outdoors, make sure your garden is placed where it will receive plenty of light.
The better and more thorough your approach to lighting is, the more likely you are to see firm, dense, and bountiful buds during harvest.
Whether it is too much or too little, getting your lighting right is one of your top priorities.
Issues With Nutrition
Marijuana plants are sturdy and steadfast, but that doesn’t mean they can’t suffer if their conditions aren’t properly taken care of. A lack of appropriate nutrition can lead to immature buds that are loose and airy, far from the dense final product most growers are looking for. Pay close attention to the NPK of your plant as well as its lifecycle as one will impact the other.
If you find that your nutrition is on point then you might want to look at the pH level of the root zone. If your root zone is too acidic or too basic, it will struggle with nutrition, which will lead to loose and airy bud development.
Size Your Pots Correctly
Your cannabis plants will grow to embrace the size of the pot they have been planted in. All plants will begin with a small container before they are transplanted at a later time. If your plant is only going to grow up to two feet in height, a simple five-gallon container will do the job.
Here is a rough size-to-bucket chart for your convenience.
- 12 Inches Height: 3 Gallon Container
- 24 Inches Height: 3 to 5 Gallon Container
- 36 Inches Height: 6 to 8 Gallon Container
- 48 Inches +: 12 Gallon Container
As your plant’s expected size continues to heighten, you will need to accommodate it with larger and larger buckets. Give your plant’s root system the space it requires to grow healthy, fully mature, and potent buds.
How Can I Correct Airy Buds?
Even if you notice that your buds are a little loose and airy, you don’t have to give up all hope. Cannabis can thrive and bounce back from several situations, so let’s showcase how we can expedite the maturation process so that you can get a more potent and bountiful harvest.
- Bud Density Solutions – If you want to address the situation immediately, head to your local hydroponic garden shop to pick up a bloom-boosting nutrient solution. Bloom-boosters provide a full range of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids to help rejuvenate your plant.
- Correct Feeding Schedule – Fix your watering schedule so that your plant is receiving precisely the amount of water it needs without giving it too much. If you are using an automated hydroponic system, take time to check that your pumps and timers are all set appropriately.
- Drop Humidity Levels Before Harvest – If you can get your humidity levels below 45% for the final stretch of harvest, roughly three weeks prior, you’ll enjoy tighter buds with increased resin production as a result.
- Harvest On Time – You are also going to want to pay close attention to when you harvest. If you are in a hurry and end up harvesting early, your entire plant will suffer as a result. Wait for the trichome on your bud to slowly turn to a more amber hue as this is a sign of maturity. Consider a magnifying glass or the zoom feature on your phone to properly evaluate the trichome heads.
- Check Genetics – As we discussed above, some sativa strains are predisposed to stretched, loose, and airy buds. If you get proven genetics from a reputable supplier, you should have a much better outcome.
